Act Biography
Kingsize was formed back in early '99 by Mark Pearson (Keyboardist) with its' name deriving from the 1950's Ska track of the same name (written by Baba Brooks and his band). The rest of the member line up derived from many X members from Skaboom, the UK's premier Ska band (gigging for 5-6 years all over GB) including Jon Read who had just finished a USA/European tour playing trumpet for 'The Specials'.
Originally starting off as a 7 piece instrumental band we later introduced 2 more new members - Ming Nagel on Bass (replacing Jon read who longed for his trumpet) and Russ Coleman thus creating a powerful 5 piece brass frontline!
Kingsize aim to bring back to audiences that solid, rhythmic and powerful Ska sound of the old time greats (and more recent ones!) and simply entertain the pants off you. If your feet don't tap and your body don't move - you're probably dead!
Press Pass (Midlands Music/Arts Review Magazine) - June 2002
"...there is also a pedigree of sorts within the band that includes past members of Skaboom and The Specials, and like any other ska band of note they have on their frontline a humungous horn section, a five piece powerhouse of parping madness.
I got the feeling that something 'real' is about to happen. These people have 'real' instruments, the brass section looks like a firing squad!
The band unleash 'Al Capone' and the overall impression is one of being outside of a party, I can feel myself being drawn in. Whatever it is, it's totally infectious. I start off standing at the back, but in the end get sucked into the dance melee up front.
These songs are classics in their own right and in the hands of Kingsize they become re-presented with passion and integrity."
