Act Biography
The Pennyhangers were established in 2007 as a trio, but it was not until late 2008 that they were completed when new lead guitarist Andy joined the mix. A mixture of school, internet forums and sheer luck pulled the band together. In 2009, they have played such prestigious venues as The Monto Water Rats Theatre in London, De Montfort University Union, The Musician, The Charlotte and Glastonbudget ’09, as well as hosting their own night at Superfly, ‘The Pennyhangers Presents…’ which regularly draws in crowds of well over 500.
A Penny Hang (Sailor's Slang) is noted as an establishment common in port cities, usually located in a cellar or basement. It featured hooks in the walls, with ropes strung in parallel from one side to another at about shoulder height. In the late evening, drunk and exhausted "clients" who had spent all their money, or were too wasted to be allowed anywhere else would enter the penny hang, after paying a penny, they would then drape themselves over a rope, attempt to sleep as best they could. As a crowning flourish to the glories of this place, the proprietor would come down in the morning and untie one end of the rope so that the clientele who had not managed to wake up and stagger out already would collapse together in a heap on the floor.
