Act Biography
The jp fell together at the start of 2007 to produce a dark, melodic blend of rock and punk inspired by the ominous inevitabilities which life throws at us all.
jaded playboy have played 150 shows and counting all over the UK, stirred up interest from record labels, a music group and a publishing company in the US. Theyve recorded two demos and three critically acclaimed EP's, the latter two having shifted over 1500 copies and one of the tracks being included on the Californian record company '272 Records Punk Kills Vol VII' album. The jp have enjoyed airplay, interviews and live sessions on XFM, Dream FM(Holland), Wessex FM, BFBS World service, Talk 107, various student radio stations and podcasts including Jim Gellatly and Three from Leith. They brought the curtain down on the promotion of their latest EP 'Broken Heartland' with final dates all over the UK at the end of October and start of November. Now its back into the rehearsal room for the Edinburgh four piece to wash their faces and clip their toe nails!

Last to try to blow down the walls of Jericho were Jaded Playboy. They piqued my curiosity. Although they sounded a bit like an indie rock band, there was a splashy, almost anarchic, feel to their playing that suggested there was more to them than met the ear. An underlying playfulness? Perhaps. A touch of the theatrical? Certainly. To tell the truth, the burning hot vocals sold this band to me but there was something else lurking beneath their musical veneer. That thing was intelligence.

JADED PLAYBOY Broken Heartland EP
Edinburgh's Jaded Playboy is a quartet that synthesizes dark melodic rock with punk elements that shift between sore and sorrow lyrics which grab the listeners attention through the appeal of the overall package that lights the speakers with brilliant noise and atmosphere.
DIY unsigned rock power is fully unleashed with a tight ensemble that sonicly seems to be adept and in-tune with their own creation of sound. Like it or not, their jumble of pop'y rock, noise experiments and entrancing lyrics make the band stand out from the vast rock scene on the island.
Songs like "Broken Heartland", "Shards" and "Little Cinders" speak for themselves as proof of talent and potential. The vocal lines of Scott Ferguson slightly recall the chords of REM's Michael Stipe and the strong songwriting make the band one to watch in 2010.

Something of a dark sounding EP, looking at the vagaries of life, depression, agoraphobia and narcissism. Not a cheerful outlook then, but it works in a lot of ways. The music is melodic punky rock with a bit of swagger and keen production. For all that though, it is the acoustic title track the comes off best.

Edinburgh based Jaded Playboy are 3 local lads and a Sassenach in the form of English vocalist Scott. The boys play 'a dark melodic blend of rock and punk'.
But that perhaps undersells Jaded Playboy, yes they have the energy of punk, but it's well channelled into a feisty melodic rock vein that has distinct echoes of REM. Especially on the opening tracks Lost Inside and Hero To Zero.
If anything the EP gets better the further you delve. And of the 4 tracks, it's perhaps the final, and title track - Broken Heartland - which is the best. An acoustic gem with haunting vocals that would grace any Michael Stipe set. ***

This is a lot more difficult than it sounds. Jaded Playboy are simultaneously songwriters, noise enthusiasts and at some point were advised to slow it down a bit and not get too emo, and the results are refreshingly energetic pop punk, with literate lyrics and some biting guitar work. And yet another sleeve whose artwork belongs on a larger format. Keep an eye on this lot in 2010.

jaded playboy is very much steeped in the harsh side of love, when things seemingly start falling apart. If approached correctly this can be a rich vein to draw inspiration from but not many bands manage to do it authentically. Are these boys going to buck the trend?
Signs are good from opening track 'Lost Inside'. It's a great slow burner of a punk song with the singer's voice wobbling through the story with true vulnerability and emotion. The music is suited well to the vocals and makes for a good opening track.
The E.P closes with the title track and it is completely drowning in the ghost of Joy Division. The singer's vocal is just one murmured twist away from turning completely into Ian Curtis, which isn't a bad thing at all, and it sits well with slow acoustic picking that haunts the track. It's just vocal and guitar and it is the album highlight.

Never judge a book by it’s cover they stress to us, however looking at an EP cover with a red heart, and then looking at the tattoo design on the CD, along with the name of the band, Jaded Playboy, and you may be forgiven for thinking that this band from Edinburgh are either a hair-metal band hungover from the early 90’s, or a punk band. However, jaded playboy, whilst still subscribing to some of that mixed ideology are not either of these things.
‘Broken Heartland’ is a four-track EP that has less hooks and melodies, and more depth and musical maturity concluding as a more thinking-man’s rock band. First track, ‘Lost Inside’ starts off with some middle-of-the-road riffs and the vocals kick in sounding a cross between REM and Blackboard Jungle. There is certainly a comparison to be had with REM, through Scott’s aforementioned vocals, and the tight musical section that leans more towards a rockier sound and away from the poppier moments of Michael Stipes men. ‘Hero To Zero’ leans more towards a slow to medium tempo rock song, with a hint of Buckcherry flashing in.
‘I’m Not There’ has a great Bass line that chugs along whilst Ross’s guitar playing is sparing and more thoughtful, before the chorus that brings them all together perfectly. Then in the electric/acoustic song, ‘Broken Heartland’, Scott’s vocals sound a little more whisky soaked and gravely. It’s an example of how the slow songs are not mushy lighter-in-the-air tunes but this is a little more rock in the vein of Staind.

With two EPs behind them, this four-piece formed in early 2007 to quite a bit of success according to their MySpace page. Currently touring, they would definitely be worth a look…
Shards – Jaded Playboy
A spiky punk-pop track, this certainly wouldn’t be out of place in the record collection of any Clash fan. Strong melodies and a catchy beat make this an enjoyable hummable song. A stand-out track.
Little Cinders – Jaded Playboy
An excellent end-of-relationship lament, Little Cinders highlights the lyrical and melodic strength of the band. Reminiscent of an updated Cure, the tracks spiky guitars compliment lead singer Scott’s vocals well. A return to the more pop sound of Shards, this track confirms the band should concentrate on less metal, more melody.
Verdict
With some great songs and tight production, this band could soon be coming to a radio near you…if they continue to produce tracks like Shards and Little Cinders.
